Elvis Costello has been one of the most prolific songwriters in rock music. The album "Armed Forces" combines at times simply beautiful, almost pop, melodies with strangely dark lyrics. It was Costello's most commercially successful release (#2 in the U.K. album charts, # 10 in Billboard).
I have to admit I debated a long time about requesting this album, but hesitated because it was actually released in 1979 (although there are some albums from 1979 at 1980s.fm). However, Elvis Costello was consistently cutting edge and ahead of his time, and this album is no exception. It was one of the albums that helped push musical style finally into the 80's and I would place it in the 1980's. But don't just take my word for it - listen to some of the music samples and decide for yourself.
"Accidents will Happen" and "Oliver's Army" were both big international hits. "Peace, Love and Understanding" was on the U.S. release and was also a hit, but basically all of the songs are worth a listen. |
