The decade before computer technology altered cinema by special effects
none ever believed they would be possible was creative and entertaining,
not like today's "bigger budget to produce pt. 783 of a blockbuster", some
exceptions maybe, but lots of treasures, hidden or not.
Here's one of my absolute faves, great action/adventure art, brilliant actors,
greek mythology what i really love, a hero who isn't just a lucky fellow by
outward appearance but also acts valiantly despite of some unfair conditions
(although i have to admit his father is helping him sometimes but only to
equalize the mentioned traps set by the evil goddess) and absolutely
deserves the success, means in the end he gets the beauty and..., you know.

Wink

Difficult. Many movies I liked. I did a little list.

1980 - Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back / Altered States
1981 - Raiders of the Lost Ark / Excalibur
1982 - Blade Runner
1983 - The Right Stuff / Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi
1984 - Amadeus / 2010
1985 - Ran
1986 - Aliens / Platoon
1987 - The Untouchables / Full Metal Jacket / Predator
1988 - Tucker: The Man and His Dream / The Last Temptation of Christ
1989 - Glory / Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade / Dead Poets Society / The Abyss

Are you sure I have to choose one? Very Happy

Ok. The winner is Blade Runner & Aliens. Oh, they are two! Whatever. Very Happy

Cool ideas Blasph & Sirius!

I'm afraid my contribution won't be very original Wink

1980 - The Empire Strikes Back
1981 - Excalibur
1982 - Blade Runner
1983 - Ghostbusters
1984 - The Terminator
1985 - Back to the Future
1986 - Short Circuit Laughing
1987 - Robocop
1988 - Rainman
1989 - Batman

If I'd choose only one, it would be... TADAAAAM! Blade Runner (applause)

Honorable mentions to Conan the Barbarian (1982), Top Gun (1986), Princess Bride (1987) and Indiana Jones III (1989)!

Wonderful choices - most of them are on my list too... but Total Recall? A little off the decade, that one. As for Star Wars, I'll pretend that you mean "The Empire Strikes Back,"which is the best one of the lot anyway. Laughing

Welllll... Total Recall was from 1990, so I was close... Embarassed
I recently watched it again, and I thought it has a lot of that 80s look.

As for Star Wars.... suuure I meant The Empire Strikes Back!!

Spoiler:
As I watched all of them only in the 90s it doesn't really matter!

I think the biggest tell-tale sign is if Arnie himself has his 80's look. Very Happy

And I too am in the minority here when I say that I found Blade Runner to be a tad overrated. I mean, seriously - the pacing made me fall asleep. Halfway through the movie, I started to dream of electric sheep.

All of the above are great picks. If I could choose none of the above, and had to pick one from each year, I would also add:

Caddyshack (1980)
For Your Eyes Only (1981)
The Last American Virgin (1982)
Risky Business (1983)
Red Dawn (1984)
Commando (1985)
Labyrinth (1986)
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Young Guns (1988)
Road House (1989)
Navy Seals (1990)
Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Army of Darkness (1992)

and, of course,

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Wink

Best movie nod would go to Die Hard, with honorable mention going to The Princess Bride.
